Adam visited the Leyburn House on the 16th December to receive the Passivhaus Institute certificate for our first straw bale house.

The project is the first project to receive this standard in North Yorkshire, with the Head of Richmondshire Planning Department, Peter Featherstone, in attendance to have a tour of the property.

The Clients, Ruth and Peter, have worked tirelessly to manage this self-build project, with many challenges to overcome along the way, but they got there, and everyone is justifiably proud.

The project uses recycled concrete aggregate in its foundations and no cement based products above ground, and only recycled plastic products.

It incorporates a full PV array to the roof, water recycling system, MVHR with heat recovery, straw bale insulation, lime plaster internally and lime render externally, with heating only supplied by a single 3kW wood-burning stove and two towel rails.

We will be publishing the full materials specification list and working details in the New Year.
