"BRADFORD GRAMMAR SCHOOL, SCIENCE FACULTY & LEARNING LINK"

The challenge to create a dynamic connection between the existing and new buildings at Bradford Grammar School has been realised in the Learning Link - an elevated transition and learning space of dramatic proportions.  The building routes between the existing Science Faculty and Library and terminates at the new Chemistry and Social Sciences Building.

The project is due for completion at the end of this year and will enhance the school's long standing reputation for excellence in Science.

"ECO PODS COMPLETION"

Halliday Clark has just successfully completed two new ECO PODS at Carlton Bolling College and Laisterdyke Business and Enterprise Centre for Bradford Metropolitan Council as part of a collaborative effort with Bradford Youth Groups.

The two PODs have been built from a pair of recycled shipping containers and utilize solar energy and rainwater harvesting and filtration systems to create a fully sustainable eco resource for local schools and community groups.

Each site was chosen on local school grounds, where they could be utilized as a learning resource as part of the science curriculum for sustainability.

Innovative features include:

Transparent panels provide insight into the use of various types of sustainable insulation.
Surface mounted electrical conduits allow users to trace energy from its source to each light or socket.
Monitoring systems provide feedback as to how much energy is being used at any time.
A composting toilet facility in each pod.

"BRADFORD BSF"

Halliday Clark has been commissioned by Integrated Bradford and Education Bradford to take three of the secondary schools in the BSF programme Wave 3 to Outline Business Case (OBC).

Carlton Bolling College, Queensbury School and Ilkley Grammar School have all been confirmed to be either remodelled or, as in the case of Ilkley, rebuilt as a bespoke new building on a new site.

Following detailed analysis of a series of options drawn up by Halliday Clark, Education Bradford has selected its preferred options which will go forward to OBC in mid-June this year.

Andrew Southey, Director for Education projects says:

"The commission under the Bradford BSF programme complements our vast education workload, including several City Academies, primary schools and private college projects.  Whilst all of the sites are challenging, we are looking forward to creating the best possible solution for each school for the budget given".

"THE HUNT HOUSE, SHEFFIELD"

Having admired one of Halliday Clark's contemporary houses in Sheffield, Tom and Emily Hunt approached and subsequently commissioned the practice to design their new mid-terraced house in the Woodseats area of the city.

Having gained detailed planning approval, the scheme is now heading towards site and has been earmarked for Channel 4's "Grand Designs" series, to be aired Spring 2010.

Director, Adam Clark says:

"This is an exciting project in many ways.  To get such an enthusiastic client, and supportive Planning Authority, has been a breath of fresh air.  We are seriously looking at taking the design concept forward with the client to possibly repeat a version of the dwelling for volume house builders and Housing Associations, which will satisfy the ever-increasing thermal standards and Lifetime Homes' criteria".

"WEST LAKES ACADEMY SUCCESS"

Halliday Clark has just been awarded, as part of the Kier Education team, the new build City Academy for West Lakes Academy in Egremont, Cumbria.

The circa £22m build 8 Form Entry Academy is currently going through concept design stages and is due to hit site in summer 2009.

Andrew Southey, Director for Education projects says:

"This is a major win for Halliday Clark, spreading our education projects from the Midlands across to the North-East and now the West coast. The unique design will combine the Academy's aspirations with a contextual response to the town of Egremont, making it an exemplar project for future Academies in the region".

"LANGCLIFFE ENVIRONMENTAL CENTRE MOVES FORWARD"

Sponsored by Yorkshire Forward and Yorkshire Dales National Park, this unique project took a step forward toward fruition this week.  Incorporating the latest thinking in low environmental impact design, the £13m scheme was given the green light to go towards a planning approval in the New Year.

Founding Director Adam Clark says:

"For such a cutting edge project, the protracted timescales are perhaps inevitable for a scheme of this type. The latest news to create a way forward to a planning determination in the New Year will enable such an exciting scheme to reach a point where our innovative ideas for sustainable building techniques will get closer to reality".
